Knitting
Beginning Knitting Teacher: Darlene Umble

Class limit: 6 Cost: $25 plus materials
This class is designed mainly for the student who has never knitted before. However, if it has been a while since you held knitting needles in your hands, this would also be a good class where you can refresh your skills. You will learn the basics of knitting such as casting on, the knit stitch, the purl stitch, garter stitch, stockinette stitch, binding off, and reading a simple pattern. All of these techniques will be covered while making a simple dishcloth.
Classic Socks Teacher: Darlene Umble

Hand-knitted socks continue to be very popular projects. If you have never tried making some of your own, this may be the time to jump on board and give it a try. In this class you will learn the classic construction of socks using double pointed needles.
Felted Clogs (Slippers) Teacher: Darlene Umble

Class limit:8 Cost $35 plus materials
This class is great for someone who has already mastered the basic knit and purl stitches and would like to learn some additional knitting techniques. In this class you will learn how to make a stitch (m1), slip slip knit (ssk), wrap and turn (w&t). We will use these techniques while making short rows. This pattern also requires the making of a double sole. After the clog is knit you will be given tips on how to do the felting. Come and join us for this great class and when done you will have a warm pair of slippers to keep your toes warm during this cold winter season.
Knitted Hat Teacher: Darlene Umble
Mon March 1, 8 10AM-12PM
Class limit:8 Cost $25 plus materials
Using the free Jejune hat pattern from Berroco, you will learn a new knitting technique where yo’s are used to produce an interesting affect throughout the hat. This hat is knit on double pointed needles and uses only two hanks of Berroco’s Inca Gold yarn.
Intro to Fair Isle Knitting: Easy Felted Tote Bag (Evening class) Teacher: Jackie Lauffer

Class limit:8 Cost $40 plus materials
If you’ve been afraid to try Fair Isle, this beautiful and practical felted tote bag is the perfect way to learn how to do stranded colorwork. In this class, you’ll be assisted with color choice and yarn selection, then we’ll cast on and learn to read Fair Isle pattern charts! A two-handed, two strand technique will be used. If you can knit and purl confidently, English OR Continental method, you can learn to knit Fair Isle.

Not all traditional penny rugs were made using circles. In the 19th Century penny rugs were just as often made from appliquéd woolen pieces. In this class we will use the blanket stitch and appliqué techniques to create a floral table runner. The sample is made in the reds and greens so beloved by women in the mid 19th Century making it very fitting for the holidays..
RUG HOOKING
Beginning Rug Hooking Teacher: Peg Kauffman

Class limit: 10 Registration fee: $45 plus Materials cost: $45
Material cost may be paid at time of class. A frame is required. You may bring your own or one will be available for a $25 refundable deposit if returned in three months.
This class will teach the basic skills of rug hooking, enabling the student to complete a small mat that can be used as a wall hanging or a pillow. You will choose your project using one of three primitive rug hooking patterns. Come and join one of our most popular classes offered here at OPW. But beware, it can be addicting!!!
*** No Saturday class has been scheduled during the winter. However, if there is enough interest and we can get a minimum class size of 5, we would be glad to try to schedule a Saturday class. Please call or email and give us your name if you are interested.
RUG BRAIDING (Rug or Frame for Hooked Rug)
Beginning Rug Braiding Teacher: Marie Kurtz
Tues Jan 26, Feb 2, 9, March 2 9:30AM-12PM
Class limit: 6 Registration fee:$55 plus
Material costs will depend on type and size of project: Estimated : $30-$50
Learn the basic techniques of rug braiding by making a 6”x 18” runner that can be expanded to a larger rug or attach braids to a previously hooked rug.
Bring your own hooked rug if you want to attach the braids. In addition to the rug also bring your own darning needle and quilt batting.
Class Policy
- Class sizes are limited. To ensure a spot in the class, payment must be made at time of registration.
- All yarn and wool products used in classes must be purchased from OPW. You may bring your own needles or other tools needed for the class. Some classes will also require the purchase of a pattern. A discount will be given on all purchases that are required for a class.
- Because classes are planned according to enrollment, registration fees are not refundable or are not transferable to another class unless there is someone available to take your place in the class. If you can’t attend class but can find someone to take your spot, you will be given credit toward another class. A waiting list will be established for all filled classes.
- Classes may be cancelled if there are less than three students registered for any one class. At that time a refund will be given.
- Students must assume responsibility for attending classes. Teachers are not required to make up classes missed by individual students.
- Materials for all knitting classes must be purchased prior to the start of class.
- We’d appreciate if all cell phones are turned off during each class session.
