CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Taste of Aran Afghan Block of the month
This block of the month class is at the halfway point, as we started in January. One block each month is covered, but new students are still welcome to jump and begin working on the block for that month.

This afghan is a tribute to patterns one finds in Aran designs, mixing some challenging and unique patterns with traditional cables. If you love cables and want to try some new stitches, this sampler afghan is a great way to do it.

Top Down Cardigan:
Are you feeling ready to tackle your first sweater? Or do you want to learn skills like shaping and buttonholes? The top down cardigan is a basic adult woman’s cardigan which requires very minimal finishing. This is a fun pattern that you will be making for years to come. Basic knitting skills required.

Cables 101 Vest
This vest, designed by cables master Janet Szabo, was designed for the novice cable knitter. Don’t be fooled by the complex look of this pattern. We’ll cover how to set up the different cables, how to track multiple cables at the same time and how to do shaping when dealing with cables. The vest can be made with either a shawl collar or a traditional ribbing neckline.

Felted Clogs
Prepare for the cold winter by knitting a warm pair of felted clogs. In this class you will learn to knit in the round using circular needles. Clogs will be felted at home for a custom fit. Would make a great Christmas gift!

Homework : Cast on correct amount of stitches for the sole and knit one row.

Beginner Knitting Seminar
This three hour seminar is geared for the brand new knitter. We'll cover casting on, the knit stitch and the purl stitch, and casting off, if time allows.

Please bring a pair of size 7 needles to class and a worsted weight yarn (the label should reads\ that it knits 20 stitches to 4"). Look for a smoothly spun, light colored yarn to be sure you can see stitches clearly.

Cabled Mittens
Here’s a nice easy project for someone who would like to try knitting cables. Knit a pair of mittens with a beautiful cable pattern on the top. Finish in time and use them during the cold winter months ahead.

Entrelac Shawl
This entrelac shawl was a new design modeled in a fashion show at a recent national needlearts convention. It is a beautiful entrelac pattern using Jojoland’s Rhythm yarn. The shawl is bordered by a Cobweb Frill edge which is added separately. You will learn the entrelac knitting technique while making this beautiful shawl. This class is for the intermediate knitter.

 Box Stitch Pillow
This class is for the novice knitter. Absolutely no knitting skills required, as we'll learn as we go! Starting with the basics, this pattern will build upon what you learn as you go, creating a lovely pillow. The class will cover casting on, knitting, purling, casting off and seaming as well as how to read a knitting pattern.

Christmas Stocking
Have you ever thought about knitting a pair of socks but were a bit intimidated by the thin yarn and double pointed needles? Here’s a chance for you to take a dip into the world of sock knitting and use worsted weight yarn and circular needles. You’ll learn the basic techniques of sock knitting but will come away with your very own Christmas stocking.

Finishing
Okay, the sweater pieces are done. Now what? In this class we'll go over the mattress stitch, how to weave in ends and how to avoid ends to weave in. We'll discuss how to think about our finishing before we even start our projects.

Homework : using a light colored, worsted weight yarn, make two swatches 4" x 4" (cast on 20sts and work 28 rows).

Classic Socks
If you have never had the joy of knitting or wearing hand knit socks than you MUST take this class! This is a very basic sock pattern on double pointed needles. You will learn knitting in the round on double pointed needles, turning the heel of a sock, shaping, and kitchner stitch. Basic knitting skills required.

Homework: Please have gauge swatch completed prior to first class. This class will also require knitting between each class to complete a sock by class end.

Socks on 2 Circular Needles
Perhaps you’ve learned the basics of sock knitting but would like to try using circular needles instead. In this class you will learn how to knit one sock using two circular needles. If you did not take the Basic Sock class, you can still take this class. (Required: Booklet, “Socks Soar on 2 Circular Needles: ).

Woman’s Vest
This is a great class for a relatively new knitter. Perhaps you know how to knit and purl and are comfortable with the garter and stockinette stitches but would now like to take the next step. A vest is a perfect project for you. You will learn how to knit on circular needles with very little seaming when done. You will also learn how to pick up stitches and make button holes.

Lace Baby Cardigan
This beautiful baby cardigan is sure to be an heirloom. In this class you will learn basic lace knitting, shaping, buttonholes, and finishing. This is an intermediate pattern.

 Yarn 101
Are you confused by all the different yarn weights? What's the difference between a fingering and a sport weight and what does "DK" weight mean? What are all those funny signs on the yarn label? We'll learn how to read yarn labels, discuss the difference between the various weight yarns as well as learn the importance of gauge.

 Felted Bag
Felted bags continue to be very popular. Perhaps you’ve never made any before and would like to give it a try, or perhaps you would just like to try a new pattern while making new friends. Come and join the party!

Manos Afghan Block of the Month
This class will meet once a month to make a block for a beautiful Manos afghan. It’s a wonderful opportunity for new knitters to develop their skills by learning a different stitch pattern each month.

Beginning Crochet
Crochet is Hip! Crochet is receiving more recognition in the fashion industry and bringing with it more books and beautiful patterns from which to choose. In this class you will learn how to understand your gauge, work from a pattern, create the basic Single, Double and Half Double stitch as you crochet your first baby blanket. You will also be introduced to textured stitches and some finishing techniques.  This class is for beginners or those who want to brush up on their skills.

Granny Squares
Join the fun and learn how to crochet those cute little Granny Squares. During each class you will learn two different patterns and how to crochet them together into a larger afghan or project.

Rug Hooking
For this class you will be given a complete kit which includes hand dyed wool strips from OPW and all materials needed to make your first hooked rug project. You will have a choice of several primitive designs for this first project. This class is designed for beginners or those with limited hooking experience.
Class hours: 8 Class size: limited to 12 Cost: $45 plus materials (approximately $45)

You may bring your own rug hooking frame with you or use one of ours. If using one of our frames, a $25 deposit will be collected at the beginning of class. This entire deposit will be returned when the frame is returned.

Spinning
Learn how to turn sheep fleece into beautiful handspun yarn! You will learn how to take raw fleece, wash it, card it and prepare it for spinning. During much of the class you will be learning how to take that prepared fleece and turn it into yarn. Each student will have the use of their own wheel during this class. Materials are included in the registration fees.

CLASS POLICY

  • Class sizes are limited. To ensure a spot in the class, payment must be made at time of registration.
  • All yarn and wool products used in classes must be purchased from OPW. You may bring your own needles or other tools to use. Some classes will also require the purchase of a pattern. A 10% discount will be given on all purchases that are required for a class.
  • Because classes are planned according to enrollment, registration fees are not refundable or are not transferable to another class unless there is someone available to take your place in the class. If you can’t attend class and find someone to take your spot, you will be given credit toward another class. A waiting list will be established for all filled classes.
  • Classes may be cancelled if there are less than three students registered for any one class. At that time a refund would be given.
  • Students must assume responsibility for attending classes. Teachers are not required to make up classes missed by individual students.
  • Classes will start promptly, so make sure all materials are purchased prior to the start of class.
